Assistive Technology: Why it is an essential part of unlocking your child's potential at school.

Why is it important to understand that assistive technology is an important part of the provision for dyslexic students? John Hicks explains more inspired by his visit to the ATEC Conference 2021.

I had a wonderful day out yesterday attending the ATEC Conference. A showcase of assistive technology that is literally changing the lives of dyslexic learners. In the video below I give an overview of what I saw and shared some thoughts about how assistive technology should be an essential part of any dyslexia intervention. Some key points for you to consider...

➡Parents should be learning about assistive technology as soon as they realise their child is dyslexic. It will pay dividends in the long run.

➡It is worth exploring the different types of AT this is available. Not every bit of tech is going to meet your child's needs to use your understanding of those needs to select the right bit of tech. Don't just buy tech because if it doesn't work for your child then this may leave them feeling like something is really wrong with them.

➡Assistive technology provision should be treated as an essential part of a holistic intervention for dyslexia alongside appropriate teaching strategies and emotional support. When negotiating for support bear this in mind.

The video below, elaborates more about these topics and would be useful to watch if you are a parent of a dyslexic student.
