The British Dyslexia Association has been providing workshops for parents of dyslexic children for over a year now with support from St David’s College, a specialist dyslexia mainstream independent college in North Wales.

As one of the speakers at these events, I am acutely aware of how lost a parent can feel when their child is diagnosed with dyslexia, or if they have suspicions that their child is dyslexic and are unsure of what to do next to help.

The aim of these meetings is to give parents some useful signposts, some knowledge and awareness of what challenges they are likely to be facing in supporting their children, to know that they are not alone and that the British Dyslexia Association is there to provide support and advice.

During the events themselves, parents get to find out more about dyslexia and what to do to support a child academically from BDA CEO Helen Bowden as well as find out about the emotional impact of experiencing dyslexia in families from myself and they also get to hear about some of the technology that is available that can help a child or young person to reduce the barriers to learning from assistive technology expert, Arran Smith.

Representatives from St David’s specialist dyslexia school will be on hand to answer questions about supporting the education of a dyslexic child.
